Ian is a highly qualified lighting design specialist with a broad and comprehensive background in the application of both interior and exterior lighting. His expertise lies in the technical aspects of the science of lighting design and the creative approach to the application of the craft.
Ian has been a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (I.E.S.) of Australia for a period of 18 years and is currently the Senior Vice President of the Victorian Chapter. He has been a judge for the I.E.S Meritorious Lighting Award at both State and National levels establishing him as one of the most sought after lighting advisors in the country.
Ian’s career began as an electrical apprentice at the City of Melbourne Electricity Supply Department in 1978. He quickly advanced as a lighting advisor within the Department’s Customer Advisory Service. During this period Ian worked on many major lighting projects in Melbourne including the lighting design for centre court at the National Tennis Centre which was the first independent computer based design of it’s type in Australia.
In 1988 Ian moved to Thorn Lighting as Senior Lighting Engineer. In this demanding role Ian was responsible for all technical aspects of Thorn’s business in Victoria and Tasmania. Ian completed many major projects across both states including the Derwent Entertainment Centre in Hobart and numerous landmark CBD projects in Melbourne. In 1991 Ian was promoted to State Technical Manager following the merger of Thorn and Associated Lighting Industries.
Ian transferred his lighting and project management skills to London in 1995 where he successfully managed the design and lighting upgrade for a chain of outdoor adventure retail stores across the UK.
Returning to Australia in 1996, Ian established Boheme Lighting and Education of which he is a director. He has lectured in Lighting Design at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) for a period of 6 years and is currently teaching design courses in Tasmania and Thailand. He considers amongst his latest successes, the lighting of new Museum of Victoria, the façade of The Melbourne Town Hall and feature lighting at Crown Casino. Ian is now being sought by Melbourne’s premier Urban Artists to provide contemporary lighting design for their outdoor sculpture installations across the state.
Ian has many interests in sailing, skiing, cycling and outdoor activities that are outside of his professional career. |
